Each year the Royal Aeronautical Society Australian Division is proud to sponsor a number of awards to recognise upcoming aerospace professionals.
AUSTRALIAN AVIATION MUSEUM STEM SCHOOLS AWARD
THE AWARD
The Australian Aviation Museum (AAM) STEM Schools Award is presented annually by the Royal Aeronautical Society Australian Division (RAeSAD) and was established in 2020 based on donated funds provided by the Australian Aviation Museum Reference Library Inc (AAMRL).
The Award is presented to the school team that is deemed by the RAeSAD AAM Award Committee to have provided the best written, poster or graphic report on their experiences and learnings arising from participation in the RAeSAD ‘Cool Aeronautics’ STEM outreach program (see below).
It comprises a engraved plaque, certificate and a cash prize of $1,000. The plaque, certificate and $500 is to be presented to the school and the remaining $500 is to be presented to the student team, with the intention of being used towards educational outcomes.
BACKGROUND
The RAeSAD runs a national STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) schools outreach program called “COOL AERONAUTICS”.
The COOL AERONATUICS program aims to introduce school children and the public to the world of aviation, aerospace engineering and space with the ultimate objective of encouraging students to embark on tertiary studies and careers. In particular, COOL AERONAUTICS embodies the Society’s aim to ‘promote aerospace and aviation to a new generation’.
This program takes aviation experts (typically RAeSAD members including senior industry figures) into schools to present highly interactive practical aerospace educational sessions; interactive activities at community events; and day-long events for invited schools which may also include site visits.
ELIGIBILITY
Throughout the year the RAeSAD Cool Aeronautics National Coordinator will request from participating school groups a report on their experiences and learnings arising from participation in the RAeSAD ‘Cool Aeronautics’ STEM outreach program. This may be a written report, a poster or other appropriate graphic or digital presentation.
The Award winning school will be based on the report which best reflects that their participation in the program that has made them enthusiastic about, and encouraged them to consider, secondary subjects and tertiary studies and careers that align with the national objectives of attaining and sustaining an innovative and high-technology capability in the aerospace fields.
